Right on the beach in Byron, this building was designed with a keen focus on durability and minimal maintenance. The design acknowledges that timber decking feels great to stand or sit on and helps in the ‘de-sanding’ process before entry to the building.
Recycled grey ironbark is the decking of choice with nil finish. The deep beachfront verandahs provide plenty of shade and much interaction with the passing parade in the street. Stacking louvre shutters temper the northerly when it blows in.
The first floor apartments have very private courtyards, gardens and a bath-house: the apartments break away from the constraint of their shared walls and the layout feels more like a series of pavilions. The northerly breeze has also been put to good use as a natural ventilation technique for the basement carpark.
